What Is Kambo

Kambo is the secretion that comes from the Giant Green Tree Frog, scientifically, known as “Phyllomedusa Bicolor”. This frog lives in the upper part of the Amazon Rainforest where indigenous tribes traditionally used it to gain strength, cleanse, energize the mind and bodies of the hunters (also known as “hunting magic”), immunity, cure illnesses, and also to clear away dark or negative energies known as “Panema”, amongst many other benefits.

The secretion is harvested shortly after dawn by the tribes who will sing and imitate the frog’s song (their song usually announces the rain). The frogs are very passive and tied carefully by each leg in an X shape. The first layer of secretion is then carefully scraped off and dried on a small bamboo stick. If the frog is properly harvested, it is only the first secretion that are taken. One, because this is the strongest and two, because this method leaves the frog with sufficient secretion to defend itself from predators. The frog is handled with kindness, respect, great care and never harmed as the tribes believe that harm to the frogs will anger the animal spirits they live so closely with.

Research has shown that Kambo secretion contains a highly complex cocktail of bioactive peptides (short chains of amino acids) which have been proven to strengthen the immune system. As a bioactive peptide it performs a specific biological function that has a positive impact on the human body. It is one of the strongest natural anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, antimicrobial and anesthetic substances, which enables Kambo to destroy microbes and viruses and heal infections. This is possible because these bioactive peptides are a natural substance that the body recognizes, unlocks at a cellular level, and cleans out deposits left in the cell by foreign substances that the cell was not able to process alone. It works as a powerful cleanser as it detoxes the liver and intestines. This deep level of cleansing is healing for the physical body, but can also promote healing on an emotional and spiritual level. Therefore, this makes Kambo very effective for any physical and emotional disorders.

The use of Kambo differs amongst tribes however, the main indigenous use revolved around lifting “Panema” (indigenous name for dark or negative energy and for “Hunting Magic”). They believed this “Hunting Magic” sped up their agility, run faster, sleep and eat less and provided them excess energy during hunting. Another belief was that it made the hunter invisible by temporarily eliminating their human odor. Hunting was not the only way they used this medicine; they also use it medicinally to support the following: malaria, snake bites, fevers, infections, fertility problems, cleanse, detox and strengthen body and mind, increase energy and stamina and to reduce pain.

Outside of the forest, Kambo has been the subject of nearly three decades of medical research. As with venoms from snakes and scorpions, researchers believe that Kambo will open up a new world of treatments for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, Chronic Pain, Cancer, HIV, Parkinson’s Disease, Alzheimer’s, Depression, Vascular problems, Hepatitis, Diabetes, Rheumatism, Arthritis, Addictions and much, much more. Their work consists of attempting to identify, isolate and reproduce the incredible and unique chemical cocktail that Kambo is known for. It contains dozens of peptides (short chains of amino acids), which some of these are bioactive peptides. Bioactive peptides mean they have an affinity and selectivity for binding with receptor sites in humans (A receptor is like a lock, when opened with the right key —the bioactive peptide— triggers specific chemical reactions in the body). The peptide families represented in Kambo include Bradykinins (phyllokinin), Tachykinins (phyllomedusin), Caeruleins, Sauvagine, Tryptophyllins, Dermaseptin, Deltorphins and Bombesins. Recent studies have shown that Kambo contains multiple antimicrobial peptides effective against drug resistant strains of bacteria, fungi, protozoa, parasites and virus, providing opportunities for the development of new and more efficient nanotechnological-based therapies for treating infectious diseases. Several years of ongoing research by the University of Paris have shown Kambo to be extremely effective at killing cancer cells. In addition, Queens University in Belfast recently won a prestigious award for their ground breaking work with cancer and frog secretions.

Despite the billions of pounds/euros and dollars being poured into researching and developing mainstream synthetic medication from Phyllomedusa Bicolour frog secretions, no one has yet managed to reproduce the original! Kambo in its original, natural state/form. Kambo is a holistic treatment that works on the body, mind, emotional and spiritual levels in ways that we don’t completely understand yet. The indigenous tribes of the Amazon are quite right to use the word ‘magic’ when describing this secretion.

what are the beneficial effects of kambo?

Kambo is one of the strongest natural anti-inflammatories, antibiotic, antimicrobial and anesthetic substances found in the world and one of the strongest, natural ways to strengthen the immune system. It is also recognized for its detoxification abilities for the liver and the intestines, a powerful cleanser. Immediate and short-term effects can include enhanced mood, alertness, clarity, focus, calm, energy and increased resistance to stress, tiredness, hunger and thirst.

The mind becomes still, you feel lighter and everything becomes easier to manage. In the longer term, Kambo empowers the immune system, rousing the body’s defense systems to their natural functions so that existing health problems are improved and future ones are less likely to occur. In spiritual terms, Kambo works in a mystical fashion as a light that opens the way, helping us to overcome obstacles and release energetic blockages on an emotional level. It clears our energy field and realigns the chakras enabling us to break negative habits, getting out of our monkey mind, live a more holistic lifestyle and discover and become more in touch with our true essence / self.

what will you experience during kambo?

Kambo is not a psychoactive nor produces hallucinations, however, it can bring a short-altered state of reality in some people, where some individuals may receive insights and messages about living a healthier life. The effects of Kambo are strong but fast. It is an intense medicine lasting between 20 – 40 minutes overall. Once the purge has come to an end, the Kambo medicine will be taken off, and then you can rest from your experience. Within a short period of time, you will feel much better and you will be able to drink and eat normally. After the treatment, the effects may vary from one individual to another. Some may feel great while others may feel completely wiped out, so it is highly recommended to give yourself a few hours of rest after the treatment along with a good nights’ sleep. This will help you to integrate the great work you just did and start reaping the benefits.

Small points, called “gates” will be burned with a hot stick onto the skin, to expose the epidermis. Kambo secretion is mixed with a little water and shaped into small dots and placed on the open gates on the skin. The number of points varies for each individual and the practitioner will decide the right number of points for your treatment. Kambo, once applied, is delivered straight into the lymphatic system scanning the body for potential issues. The physical sensation of the medicine will act very quickly. You will experience warm flush throughout the body and head as well as increased heart rate. Everyone may experience the medicine differently; therefore, various reactions may occur at this point: dizziness, light headed, feeling spaced out, swelling in face and lips, skin tingling and fainting. Some may experience these symptoms at various degrees and if they occur there’s nothing to worry about as they will pass. Your blood pressure will then drop and soon you will begin purging out the toxins. The purging can cleanse both a physical and emotional level. It is always recommended to come with an intention to work with as this can help with focus during the treatment.

Colonics, enemas, liver flushes or any water-based detox should be avoided within 3 days either side of taking Kambo. This also includes sauna and hot yoga.
You are or have ever been bulimic or anorexic
Although highly unlikely, be aware of a condition called Boerhaave Syndrome / Spontaneous Oesophageal Rupture resulting from sudden increased intraoesophageal pressure. Because Kambo causes vomiting we need to have caution around some conditions that could weaken the oesophagus / esophagus. It’s extremely rare but has occurred a few times in healthy individuals in the last few years, you can read more about it HERE
Severe injury or trauma to the Oesophagus / Esophagus from endoscopy
Tumours in the throat (active or not)

Ulcers in the throat
Physical trauma or injury to the neck (often caused by car accidents)
People who have or have had bulimia

preparing for your kambo session:

prior your kambo session:

Eat as clean and close to mother earth as possible 3-4 days leading up to your Kambo session. Diminish or eliminate fried food and over processed foods.
Drink plenty of water so that your body is hydrated.
No alcohol or recreational drugs for 24h before or after your treatment session
If you are taking medication, first of all, please discuss with me.
Do not eat 8-12 hours before your treatment session.
Do not consume water or drinks 2 hours before the treatment.
Try to get a good night’s sleep the night before your treatment session so you are strong for the medicine

day of kambo ceremony:

You should not have eaten for 8-12 hours prior
Do not drink water the morning of your session
Take some time to reflect, write and prepare your intention. Why are you doing Kambo? What is the purpose? What is your goal? for the treatment session. Kambo is a generous medicine so the clearer your intention, the better the outcome.

After your kambo ceremony:

Kambo can leave some swelling on the face after the treatment. This will disappear within 24h of rest
Don’t plan anything for a few hours after the treatment as you might feel tired and exhausted. Give yourself time to rest afterwards.
Plan to have some soup, fruits or vegetables, nuts or light food ready so you can eat it when you are ready. This will restore your body with good sources of electrolytes.
Be kind & gentle with yourself and honour everything that comes up. Kambo can make things worse before they get better. The energy of the medicine may continue to work its magic over the hours, days, weeks and months following a session. As we release energies, we transform our internal and external lives. Allow yourself to connect with the thoughts and feelings that wish to surface. So don’t be alarmed if emotional or physical issues arise in the days after the treatment. This is what is known as in the integration process.

what to wear?

Comfortable clothing - Your body temperature will fluctuate during the process, so layers are a good idea. Also make sure that the area of your points is easy to get too. For first time treatment the right lower leg is used for women and the left top arm for men.
A change of clothes is recommended;
A blanket to wrap yourself in afterwards;
For Chakra or meridian treatments wear something suitable like bikini top for women;
Remove any restrictive jewelry;
If you have long hair, please bring a hair elastic to tie your hair during ceremony.

A blanket/sarong and spare set of clothes;
